Buenos Aires, capital and largest city of Argentina, located on the western bank of the Rio de la Plata. The city has been described by many as seductive, energetic and complex. They are called "Portenos", a multinational heritage of peoples known for their elaborate and rich cultural identity and confindence. Perhaps being the political, economic, social, and cultural epicenter strengthening beyond its borders, that gives it this strength of character.
They value their European heritage highly, composed of Italian, German, and Spanish ancestry, the lifestyle and architecture are markedly more European more than any other in South America.
Buenos Aires is a mosaic of architecture as diverse as its culture. The city has no dominating center, but several small cluster that fuse together giving attention to details and compositions forming the whole. Skyscrapers reflect their light on the older Victorian houses that fill the streets; Tango bars, the national dance, are sprinkled through out the city along with cultural institutions, parks, and businesses. Buenos Aires is also known for its magnificent boulevards such as Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida de Mayo, which runs from the Plaza de Mayo to the Plaza de Congreso, home to the national congress building, the Palacio del Congreso.
It is one of a few cities in the spanish-speaking world, that dominate intellectual and artistic life. This is demonstrated in part by the brilliantly designed, Colon Theater on Avenida 9 de Julio. The Colon opened in 1908 and is world renowned for ballet, opera, and classical music. The city has a gained notoriety for its theater district, compared to Broadway in New York.
Several annual cultural events in Buenos Aires, from the city's book fair in April draws more than 1 million visitors each year. The International Livestock and Agricultural Exhibition, held in July, celebrates the agricultural necessity to this great metropolis. The tango too as its date of commemoration, December 11, the Day of the Tango, which coincides with anniversary of the death of the city's most famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel.
Buenos Aires climate temperate, protected by the Rio de la Plata. The city has mild summers and winters rarely fall below freezing.
