Cuernavaca is a cultural treasure just 50 minutes outside of Mexico City. The scent of flowers lingers year round in its wonderful climate, equaled only by its beautiful architecture- it's easy to fall in love with Cuernavaca! One million inhabits call it home in this capital state of Morelos. So divine are the landscape and climate that both the Aztec ruler Moctezuma and colonial Emperor Maximilian built private retreats here. Cuernavaca was the holiday choice of Aztec kings long before the Spanish conquest.
Today, interestingly enough, the city has become popular for international students to come and learn Spanish. The nightlife is non-stop and caters to all tastes. Restaurants in the downtown area and throughout the city (some of which are first class) specialize in regional Mexican dishes that can be enjoyed in spacious gardens. There is also the option of having a refreshing drink in the lively, young atmosphere of the soda fountains located in front of the Palacio de Cortes.
Wander the traditional markets and you'll find many venders selling crystals, quartz, onyx, and tiger's eye, these stones come from the Tepozteco Mountains - for centuries have been considered an energy source. Continue on to the east and southeast of Cuernavaca and you'll find two volcanoes, also potent symbols of earth energy, Ixaccihuatl (the Sleeping Woman) and the recently active Popocatepetl (the Smoking Mountain). The geography and the ancient tradition of the ancient inhabitants, passed down through the sons and daughters, have given a restorative energy to this privileged place.
From high-tech to spiritual, the world-renowned spas of Cuernavaca offer pleasure and pampering to suite all tastes and budgets.
Often called the "land of eternal spring," Cuernavaca is known these days as much for its rejuvenating spas and spiritual sites as it is for its perfect climate and flowering landscapes. If springtime is when the earth experiences its annual rebirth, then what better setting for a personal renaissance? Spa services are easy to find, but more than that, Cuernavaca exudes a sense of deep connection with its historical and spiritual heritage.
