Group House for Girls
It is a private entity, supported by the government through the P.A.N.I. (National Children’s Bureau).
It functions as a home for girls between the ages of 5 and 12 years old and adolescence. During the week they reside at the home, and each Friday they leave and enjoy the weekend in their own ‘’homes’’ with their mothers. They live in on a very low economic level; many times the girls lives in impoverished as well as precarious conditions.
The girls’ mothers bring them back to the new group home ‘’Nino con Carino’’ on Sundays during the afternoon so that the girls may spend another week under a peaceful roof and be cared for by sisters.
Volunteer Work
Young women that desire to volunteer may contribute to the work of the institution in various capicities:
+In the English classes, they may give support and help the girls with their homework by explaining the different themes that the girls are learning.
+During the hour recreation time they can participate by talking with the girls, sharing experiences with them, and enjoying the enthusiasm the girls have in being with their new ‘’friend.’’
+When it is time to eat, they may also help the little ones eat their food, encouraging them to eat well. Chatting with the girls and sharing in those moments is very rewarding.
+Please realize that those who volunteer should spend time with all of the girls. Even though some may want to monopolize all of their attention, volunteers should be fair, because all of these girls need attention, love, and care.
Requirements:
+There is $100 application fee. +Volunteers must be female.
+The student must be well dressed and have an excellent personal presentation.
+Student must speak the level of Spanish necessary to understand the girls.
Teaching English
Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Costa Ricans. Classes are held from February to November.
Requirements
+There is $100 application fee.
+To speak English fluently
+Well dressed
+Former teaching experience is not required but preferred.
What components make up the volunteer work?
The student will commit to teaching native Spanish-speakers conversational and written English in these different ways:
1- Substitute English teacher. There are 3 levels of English, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The professor follows a pre-determined program which includes both conversational and written English. On average there are 5-8 students in the group classes; private classes are also available.
2- Assistant to English teacher. The responsibility of the teacher’s assistant is to help students improve pronunciation, organize games or cultural activities for the class, act as a tutor before or after the English class.
3- The volunteer also could help to the Coordinator of English program, such as getting photocopies for the classes, answering phone calls or giving information (in Spanish) about the English Program, to prepare materials or any other administrative function.

*These below projects are not directly organized by the student cooridinator in Monteverde. They are projects that past students have organized themselves. If requested students will be given the contact information for the below organizations and are encouraged to contact them directly for possible placement.
Hospital Alajuela
This is a state institution that places medical attention on people who require their services and are affiliated with their system.
Volunteer Work
Because it is an institution that tries to bring improvement to human health, a volunteer’s work is limited to observation only. The work consists of observation of the work system in Costa Rican hospitals work, observation of the patients and doctor during each consultation and doctor’s visit.
Volunteers will have a short tour of their area of interest according to the tutor’s availability of time and space.
Requirements:
+They wear a white lab coat or their own hospital attire.
+They must follow the instructions of the hospital personnel.
+They will be assigned a doctor who will guide them in their observations at the hospital.
+They must be at least a 4th year student in medical school in order to have the best volunteer experience.
+They must speak at least intermediate Spanish.

Nursing Home
It is a Christian nursing home where approximately 20 elderly individuals live, almost all of whom have been abandoned by their families and left unprotected. The personnel that labor in the home consist of 6 people, which work to share with the elderly there day and night, caring for them, helping them, and trying to turn their bad memories into a beautiful day.
Volunteer Work
In reality, most of the work consists of attending to desires, having enthusiasm and patience to share with them in their stories and experiences of the past. Also, if one would like to give a talk, share a hobby, tell a story, or sing a song. Any kind of recreation volunteers can bring is welcome. They enjoy every moment of company, affection, and care that volunteers can provide.
Requirements:
+Volunteers must be kind and have a ability to share with the elderly and brighten their day.
+Men or women may volunteer, regardless of age.

Friends of the Birds
It is a bird refuge in which birds are cared for and reproduced with the goal of reproducing the best quality birds possible. The purpose is to maintain the species of birds in Costa Rica.
Volunteer Work
+Care for the baby birds
+Care for the adult birds
+Cut fruit and prepare it for their meals
+Clean the place
Requirements:
+Volunteers must want to care for and protect the birds.
+Men and women are welcome, regardless of age.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity Costa Rica, works to create opportunities for marginalized and underserved populations with the goal of braking the cycle of oppression and poverty. The organization currently has five regional affiliates: Cartago, Central Pacific (Exparza), Nicoya, Occidental (San Ramón), and Monteverde. They have constructed about 250 houses in 12 communities. After finishing their studies at CPI, students may choose any one of the building locations to participate in the construction of housing for low income families.
