To say that Otavalo is a culturally rich is an understatement. A place of indigenous tribes rich in tradition and belief little has changed in past 100 years. Otavalo is a shopper's dream with markets that dates back to pre-inca times. The locals, known as Otavalenos, display their masterful craftsmanship most days of the week. These formal gatherings have occured for centuries; Otavalo's market is the most popular in all of Ecuador. The women wear colorfully embroidered blouses, long black skirts and shawls, golden necklaces and bracelets of blown-glass beads. The men wear calf-length white trousers, rope sandals and reversible blue ponchos.
