Gently resting near the Tormes river, Salamanca is one of the most charming Renaissance cities in Europe. Its sandstone buildings reflect a majestic allure, and rightly so is called the Golden city or the "La Dorada". Its history is recorded on the many monuments line its boarders. The bridge that marks this city is a remanent from Roman domination, and was constructed in the time of Trajan. Renowned for its architectural beauty, it was declared Humanity's Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO. In its libraries studied many erudites such as Saint John of the Cross, Father Luis of Leon, and Unamuno.
Salamanca is also dotted with beautiful cathedrals, churches and home to one of the oldest universities in the world. Small in size, Salamanca has an extraordinary richness and youthful energy-- loved by many university students that call it home.
