San Jose rests in the center of the fertile Valle Central, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes on all sides. Home to over a half million people, San Jose is an eye-captivating mixture of traditional Spanish architecture and modern mini-metropolis. On the surrounding hillside you'll find charming picturesque villages and enticing coffee plantations that have made this region famous. As you move to the lower basin you enter a vibrant cosmopolitan, with excellent museums, great restaurants and bars, quaint buildings and landscaped parks, good cafes and the odd eclectic art gallery.
The streets scene in the Plaza de la Cultural filled with musicians, artists, and street vender is one of the most vibrant places to soak up the energy. Stroll through the Mercado Central for a good meal and excellent handmade goods. Spend the day at Museo Nacional, filled with Costa Rican design and religious art or Museo de Jade, with the world's largest collection of American jade sculptures.
San Jose is the transportation hub of Costa Rica and at some point most travelers pass through it boarders. It serves as an excellent starting point to visit the rest of the country. In any direction you can wander in its vast network of roads giving access to all points in a matter of hours. And given the geographical diversity of its land, no place should go unseen. Imagine each weekend in a different place: beautiful beaches, hiking through rainforest, trek up one of the many cloud covered volcanoes. It's truly remarkable!
