French cuisine has dominated meals in Montreal. Expect many of the traditional types of food wild boar, venison, pheasant, quail, hare, and even caribou and wapiti (deer) appearing frequently on menus. Canada has also followed other cities around the world by embracing infusion with many Asian, Mediterranean and Italian restaurants. Seafood is also popular, especially salmon. In Montreal, there are smaller meals available, sandwich with smoked meat, pastrami or corned beef- a wonderful treat! They say the bagels are better here than in New York.
Many lower-priced restaurants in Montreal allow customers to bring their own wine. Look for a sign with "Apportez". Here are some helpful dining tips. An "entrée" is an appetizer, not the main course. The main course is "le plat principal". A tip left at the end of a meal is a “pourboire”.
