Dominican Republic, Christopher Columbus's first discovery in the "New World", rests on the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola. This pearl of the Caribbean has gained international praise as the Caribbean playground. Home to pristine white sand beaches and lined with palm trees that stretch for miles. But what makes Dominican Republic so striking is its contrasts. The country also has the highest mountain range in the entire Caribbean-- Pico Duarte.
This geographical diversity continues with virgin alpine wilderness, tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps, cultivated savannas, vast desert expanses and everything in between-- all within a small area, perfect to explore!
The old part of the capital, Santo Domingo, have been beautifully restored and still retain their colonial charm and is also home to the first university, cathedral, and hospital in the New World. As you move to the more modern port areas of Santo Domingo, you slip back into 20 century rhythms with Restaurants and bars, discos, shopping and cultural centers. A few miles east from Santo Domingo is the impressive cave complex of Los Tres Ojos de Agua "the Three Eyes of Water", containing three turquoise lagoons.
Not to be outshined by Cuba or Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic produces some of the best cigars in the world. Neil Godfrey of Los Maestros Cigars takes you on a tour of a real cigar factory in Tamboril. Some of the largest variety of tropical flowers and fruit bearing plants are found right here in the Dominican Republic.
