Traveling opens minds, shares culture, gives experience to those who journey and brings something to those who receive people into their world. When it's done well there is reflection and hopefully a little understanding. Some tips to get by...
Meeting people |
Always treat the people and their customs with respect. Hopefully you haven’t traveled to critize or judge but to discover or share in a perspective that’s may not be your own.
Local Customs |
Try your best to observe local customs when participating in cermonial gatherings or entering sacred places. Dressing according to local custom will make you feel more at ease. It's also important to be aware of the differences in social behaviour. Acceptable physical contact and body language varies in different destinations. Knowing the social norms in the destinations you are travelling will help you to avoid embarrassing situations. Take some time to observe the locals before you engage.

Local produce and economy |
In some locations in the world you might encounter extremes of wealth and poverty. Try to purchase from local merchants, buy local beer or juices and avoid imported brands. Bargaining can be a normal part of the process in many locations just try to avoid being overly aggressive. Give when you can, not just money but time, remember you might be the only one who interacts with a street kid that day. Whether you give money or attention be cautious as some are honestly just in need and others might want to take advantage.

Photography |
Often travellers make the mistake of losing the moment trying to capture the moment. Avoid being obtrusive, ask before you take a photo. Sometimes offering a token or even a smile can be payment enough. Try not to treat locals as part of the scenery.

Guidebooks |
Guidebooks are helpful, but should not be used as your only source. Having just one source of information is very limiting. Take advantage of the opportunity to practice your foreign language by asking a local. Discover your own adventure!
Where to start |
Start reading about the country you will visit. The welcome will be warmer if you take an interest and it's a great way to enjoy your trip before it starts! There are many virtual materials to help you with some background information about anywhere you would like to go. Music is a wonderful way to start picking up local expressions and finding the rhythm of country you will visit.
